The Art & SCIENCE of Love
A Couples Weekend Workshop
Created by Dr. John and Julie Gottman
Now offered in Marin County, this comprehensive science-based couples workshop is appropriate for engaged, married, cohabiting, gay, straight, happy or struggling couples. All of the ideas presented to you will be grounded in sound and extensive research on what actually works in relationships that are happy and stable.
Dr. John Gottman, author of What Makes Marriages Succeed or Fail, and The Seven Principles of Making Marriage Work, designed this workshop with his wife, Dr. Julie Gottman. It is based on three decades of Gottman’s research following over 3,000 couples. Over the weekend, you will learn what Gottman discovered that successful couples do to keep their relationship strong and what you can do to strengthen yours.

Introduction to Gottman Method Couples Therapy
Appleworks (closed professional event)
Session One: January 11th, 2012 | 12:25pm to 1:55pm
Couple’s therapy is a field that is rapidly evolving as more and more research is being done on adult love and bonding processes. In this introductory lecture to the research-based method of Gottman’s Couple’s Therapy, Lisa will give an overview of empirically validated patterns that predict distress in love relationships. Lisa will introduce Gottman’s Sound Relationship House Theory and the basic assumptions of Gottman Method Couple’s Counseling. Lecture will include film clips from the Gottman Institute of the Four Horsemen in action.
Session Two: January 18th, 2012 | 12:25pm to 1:55pm
As a follow-up to the January 11th lecture Lisa will introduce give us an overview of the Gottman approach to helping couples manage conflict. You will learn to assist couples to see the difference between solvable problems (situational and time limited) and perpetual problems (differences in personality and core beliefs). Gottman research shows us that 69% of the problems couples argue about are perpetual and will never be resolved. That is the bad news. The good news is that with your help couples can uncover the dream or value that lies underneath the conflict. In doing so, they can develop a healthy dialogue with their differences. They may learn to understand, as Gottman says, why giving in on some issues feels like you are giving up your bones.

About the Retreat
When couples enter the therapy office, they sting with pain and despair. They look to the clinician to referee chronic conflicts, fix their partners, and rebuild burned bridges. Now, based on Dr. John Gottman's 35 years of compelling research with over 3,000 couples, there's a practical and highly effective approach to guiding these couples across the chasm that divides them. In this workshop, you will be provided with a research-based roadmap for helping couples to compassionately manage their conflicts, deepen their friendship and intimacy, and share their life purpose and dreams.
